Chapter 21

While they waited for Calder to wake up, Brenna showed Bahadur the unseen spell.

He looked around the clearing, then pointed toward a boulder on his left. *Over there.*

*Can you discern her exact location?* Gulbahar asked.

Bahadur squinted at the area, then shook his head. *Are you near that clump of yellow flowers?*

Brenna dropped the cloak of mana to appear several meters away from the blossoms and laughed at his groan of defeat. “That was closer than the last time.”

*It seems that I do have an advantage over others in detecting you,* Gulbahar concluded. *This may work for getting closer to the hold.*

*I am going to scout the area but will be back before he wakes,* Bahadur said as he inclined his head toward Calder. He stood and stretched his wings, then took off with a great downdraft, sending dirt and leaves flying.

Gulbahar shook himself clean. *I do wish he would not be so irksome.*

“I think that’s just Bahadur’s way,” Brenna said as she brushed off her clothes and pulled leaves from her hair. “We’ll have to try to not be too close when he takes off.”

Gulbahar grumbled.

“I know what will cheer you up.” When she pulled her collection of old magecraft journals out of her bag, Gulbahar’s eyes lit up. Sitting on a rock and holding the books open allowed him to peer over her shoulder. The two of them read and discussed the notes and diagrams on each page.

*I believe these did belong to Wizard Kolbeck,* Gulbahar said with great interest. *The Salmands keep some papers and journals similar to this. Though I have only seen two, they had the same ‘K’ at the bottom of each page and those are clearly spellforms.*

Brenna felt a thrill of excitement that her treasured collection of journals really had belonged to the famous wizard. “I’ve imagined they had been Kolbeck’s all along, and now I finally know it’s true.”

A short time later, Bahadur winged back and landed right as a groan came from Calder’s direction. They turned to where he was still lying on his back and rubbing his face with one hand. “Welcome back,” Brenna said, then went and stood over him with her hands on her hips. “Welcome back.”

Calder smiled up at her. “Forgot about the losing consciousness part. How long was I out?”

“About an hour.” Brenna nudged his leg with the toe of her boot. “I guess you made your choice then.”

He sat up slowly, then grabbed her hand and pulled her down to sit next to him. “I’d pretty much decided already, but seeing the people at the Black Hold clinched it. Being bonded with Bahadur just makes us stronger and better able to help you figure out what is going on there. We may be the only ones who can.”

“Not to mention that you’ll be able to fly without almost falling off?”

“An added bonus,” he said with a grin.

“We’ve been talking while you were taking your little nap. Bahadur suggested we clear a space in the woods closer to my house big enough for him and Gulbahar to land.
